synchronicity

passion for running category: running on Wednesday, January 26 2005

Please read THIS first (you don’t have to read all of it) and then return for the rest of this evening’s post…Done? Good. Let’s continue shall we?

I’m currently experiencing a strange but wonderful synchronicity related to (surprise surprise) running. This particular sync (I don’t feel like typing the whole word again) involves someone I almost married. It was long ago (1992) and her name was Bev. Like I said, we almost married. Close but no cigar.

Like most break-ups ours was painful and I hurt for a long time. Also like most break-ups, I eventually got over it, learned from the experience and became a better person.

But guess what else happened after the break up? Yup. You got it. I started running.

This all happened shortly after becoming freshly unemployed so not only was I heartbroken, I was broke! Inside, I knew I had to get active. I needed a cheap, physical outlet. I also wanted to be alone with my grief and running fit the bill for all those things so I started. Over time, running became my salvation and, as you know, a true source of joy and passion in my life.

And it all began because I broke up with Bev.

Recently, Bev found my blog. Apparently she was searching for “complete running information” and found it from there. She then nervously sent me an email and, if you peruse the comments in my art post, you’ll see she’s now left me a comment. You see…

…Bev’s taken up running.

Synchronicity.

Welcome Bev. Welcome to running. I truly hope it brings you the joy it’s brought me. :)

Awwww, thank-you, Mark! You have fostered a wonderful and knowledgable community here, and I have learned so much from reading about other’s experiences. I appreciate your stellar insight, and besides all that … dammit .. I was touched by your post. As you know, I’ve spent much of my career with geriatric clients, and as one 107-year old woman told me …. the hardest experiences in life are the ones that teach us the most. We’re all just students in life, and the trouble we have is being aware of the lessons. (That woman was not only wise, but fit as a fiddle!) I giggled at your “Bev’s taken up running”, because sometimes “running” seems like a strong word for what I’m doing …lol… but each day, I get better and better at it, and I keep at it, which is the big deal for me. Thanks again for your good wishes.

When I think about the series of events that led me to the RBF, I totally believe in synchronicity. Besides, it’s a kick ass album from The Police.

Life is interesting that way. I have my best friend to blame for my continued running. Little did I know that signing up for a yahoo group would not only keep me running, but give me a great friend and eventually lead me to my RBF’s. And as I roam around the various blogs I find it all the changes interesting, kinda like when us women start rearranging one room we gotta start redoing em all. :-)

A very cool article. I definitely believe in synchronicity, and it’s interesting to think about it in the context of running. The internet undoubtedly allows so much more synchronicity than was ever possible before!

That is so great a story about how you found running for the reasons you did and that one of the reasons you did came around to find you through an interest in running. What goes around comes around. Welcome Bev.
